YOUTH ISN'T EVERYTHING
(Clouse: Cornerstones:
Readings for Writers)
During my morning run, I learned a lesson about respecting my
elders.  While I worked through my stretching exercises at the
side of the jogging track, I noticed a man in his late fifties.  He
was of slight build, but solid -- with no fat easing over the waist of
his navy blue sweat pants.  His face was lined but pleasant and
his eyes rather sparkled in the fall sun.  Except for his obvious
age, he looked rather impish.  I extended an invitation to run with
me, and he nodded an OK.  I informed him that I was running two
miles, and a smirk appeared on his face.  I have seen that look
before on overconfident people.  "If you think you can handle it,
Sonny, why don't we make it four miles?"  "Sonny," I thought to
myself, "who does he think he is?"  At that moment, I decided to
show him a thing or two.  We began running with me setting the
pace.  My strategy was to maintain about a fifteen yard lead until
the last mile, where I would finish him decisively.  Everything was
working out as planned, until the final mile, when suddenly I
realized my opponent was almost on top of me.  I begged for
adrenaline to give my legs the strength to finish him off, but there
was nothing left to give.  I was spent.  The next thing I knew, he
was running next to me.  With that smirk on his face as he
passed, he said, "Not bad for an old-timer, huh?"
